With a new website, the Sampson County History Museum is looking forward to reaching out to the community and the world with a different online presence.

The museum’s website, at www.sampsonhmc.com, was recently launched with the help of Livingston Graphics, a Clinton-based business offering services such as website design, logo design and sign production. Chris Woodson is looking forward to people browsing the site.

“We had the website for many years and there was a lot of things that we needed to upgrade because of changes in the museum,” Woodson said about new additions such as the state-of-the-art military and veterans building. “There was a lot of different exhibits that we wanted to highlight. We wanted to freshen things up a bit with our online presence.”

Additional pages were added to the website to include different opportunities for visitors and community members.

Disney to lay off 28,000 theme park workers

Noble Horvath

The Walt Disney Co. said it will lay off 28,000 furloughed workers in the company’s California and Florida theme parks as it moves to recover from a sharp financial blow caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Disney World and Anaheim’s Disneyland closed in March as COVID-19 cases soared nationwide and state officials in California and Florida ordered businesses to temporarily shutter. Disney lost an estimated $500 million for every two weeks the attractions were shuttered, Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy said in May. Disney World reopened to limited capacity in July, but Disneyland remains closed under California state orders.

Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro said a closed Disneyland is partly to blame for impending layoffs. In a statement, D’Amaro said that roughly two-thirds of the workers who will lose their jobs work part-time.

“Over the past several months, we’ve been forced to make a number of necessary adjustments to our business,”

Top Retail News: Holiday Spending Looks Flat

Noble Horvath

In today’s top retail news, holiday spending is expected to be flat this year, Bed Bath & Beyond rolls out same-day delivery and Target goes up against Amazon Prime Day with “Deal Days.” Also, J2 Global has agreed to buy RetailMeNot.

Q4 Outlook: Consumer Mindset Is The Wild Card

It’s fairly well accepted that holiday spending levels will be flat compared to 2019 — which, in the middle of a pandemic, is nothing short of miraculous. And the digital-first economy will drive the difference between success and failure for many retailers. But these are the easy points. What’s not so easy is to predict the nuances — and that’s where the next two weeks will fill in the blanks when it comes to planning for Q4 2020. The first nuance concerns exactly how much consumers will spend. Most predictions, as stated, show a

WEST WARWICK — Breanna Davis began calling the governor’s office months before the coronavirus pandemic began about her problems finding an apartment.

Eight months later, Davis says she has placed 116 calls to the governor’s office.

“There was already a housing issue in Rhode Island before the virus,” Davis says.

The pandemic has only exacerbated Davis’s difficulties — and her frustration. She has tried without success, she says, to get assistance through state-coordinated programs to help Rhode Islanders facing eviction during the health crisis.

US firms added 749,000 jobs in September, ADP report shows

Noble Horvath

(Bloomberg) — US companies added 749,000 jobs in September, a private report showed, indicating the labor market’s gradual rebound is continuing as demand rises from the depths of the coronavirus pandemic.

Businesses’ payrolls increased after an upwardly revised 481,000 rise in August, according to ADP Research Institute data released Wednesday. The median projection in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for a 649,000 gain in September.

While the gain could be viewed as good news for a labor market as businesses continue to hire in industries where demand is growing, ADP’s measure of private employment is still more than 10 million below its pre-pandemic level. The persistent spread of the coronavirus remains a challenge, while a stalemate over federal aid for businesses and the unemployed is limiting momentum in the economy.

Sustaining the economic rebound depends on the extent to which the government controls the spread of the coronavirus and

Already Weak, Air Travel Demand Is Fading. And Business Travel Demand Will Be Soft Whenever It Returns

Noble Horvath

The global decline in air travel will be worse than previously forecast and a new report on corporations’ plans for travel through 2021 shows that the recovery of business travel demand will continue to be sluggish even after one or more Covid-19 vaccines become available, hopefully, in the first half of 2021.

The International Air Transport Association, the airline industry’s global trade group, said Tuesday that global passenger traffic this year will be down a whopping 66% from 2019. Previously IATA had forecast a decline of 63%.
