World Bank’s IFC Warns of Asia-Pacific ‘Financial Crisis’ | Investing News

JAKARTA (Reuters) – The Asia-Pacific region risks a damaging financial crisis from a surge of non-performing loans caused by rising insolvencies, a senior official from the World Bank Group’s private sector arm said on Thursday.

In an interview with Reuters, Alfonso Garcia Mora, Vice President for Asia and the Pacific of the International Finance Corp (IFC), said bankruptcies were expected to rise by 30% because of the economic crisis caused by the new coronavirus pandemic.

While many firms have been given moratoriums on their loan repayments, many central banks are not requiring financial institutions to regularly monitor these firms’ solvency. This, said Garcia Mora, was “very dangerous”.

“What can happen is that when the bank opens their books in six months, or in 12 months, they will realise that their non-performing loans ratio is not 2% but 20%,” he said.

Citigroup to offer 6,000 jobs to youths in Asia-Pacific over three years to combat Covid-19’s impact on employment

Citigroup said it plans to offer 6,000 jobs and 60,000 training opportunities for youths across the Asia-Pacific region over the next three years to help cushion the impact from the global coronavirus pandemic, as unemployment rises in shrinking economies amid lockdowns.

Citi and the Citi Foundation will commit US$35 million together to help create economic opportunities and employability for youth from low-income and underserved communities in the region by 2023, according to a press statement.

The New York-headquartered bank is stepping-up in response to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on youth employment in the region.

HONG KONG, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) — The following are the latest developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia-Pacific countries.

NEW DELHI — The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in India Saturday morning rose to 5,308,014, India’s federal health ministry said.

During the past 24 hours, 93,337 new cases and 1,247 deaths were reported from across the country.

“The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases across India is 5,308,014 and death toll is 85,619,” reads the information released by the ministry.
