To be honest, I don't normally travel with carry-on luggage, except for extremely short trips. I bring my MZ Wallace Medium Tote Bag and a laptop backpack, but it is a lot to carry on my shoulders/back.

With the LEVEL8 Road Runner textured carry-on (in 20″), I can put my tote bag on top of the carry-on and glide through the airport, train station, and on the street, I am in love! And all my personal items fit with room to spare.

My favorite feature about the LEVEL8 Road Runner is the added laptop pocket. I was able to easily grab my laptop from my carry-on when needed without any hassle. The LEVEL8 textured carry-on also features a large main compartment, zipped side pockets, and a front compartment that's perfect for easy access to my passport and other essential documents.

The carry-on made my travels more manageable, and I didn't have to worry about packing or unpacking constantly.

I have tried hard shell bags with a “split construction” (bag zips down the middle and opens into two shallower main compartments) but they were extremely awkward and I went back to a duffel-style suitcase. In reality, that was the thing I wanted to test out the most with the LEVEL8. I am not sure what voodoo LEVEL8 luggage has conjured, but it was super easy to open, close, and maneuver, even in small. spaces.

I am now a convert!

It provides ample storage space and can handle being checked when traveling by plane. The four 360° easy-moving wheels make it convenient to navigate through airports, crowded streets, and even rough terrain.

I waltzed through RDU with both LEVEL8 cases without any problems at all.

The hard-shell design looks durable and sleek. The wide handle makes it impossible to miss grabbing it (if you have had a case with a small handle, you will know what I mean!).

We are preparing for a big southwest road trip. It will include a cross-country trip to get to Arizona-Utah and then some back-country camping at White Pocket, etc. We have our Tepui tent on the top of the truck, and the truck bed has a slider to keep gear, but our PAKMULE hitch rack cargo carrier is a bonus as it is giving us extra storage capacity!

Sierra Design's Deluxe Collapsible Wagon

[We have our Tepui tent on top of our truck so you may wonder why the heck we would want a wagon for… Well, there are lots of times, often driven by Mr. Misadventures photographic activities where I find myself hauling more than what I can carry on my back. Like on a recent camping trip at Cape Lookout where we did a sunset shoot at the lighthouse a mile away from our campsite. We had to walk up the main road which is all sand and besides photo equipment, I also brought a chair and a few other items that I carried there and back. It would have been so much easier to pull the wagon. 

When we don't camp directly on the beach, we camp at beach campsites that are on one side of the dunes. To access the beach you have to walk over the dunes with all the stuff you want for the beach in which case the Deluxe Collapsible Wagon from Sierra Designs is a godsend!

AlpenGlow Lantern from BioLite

Having good lighting is important when camping. Mr. Misadventures and I always have a variety of lightning in the form of headlamps, lanterns, etc. We aren't that into the traditional flashlight (you need your hands!) and prefer these other types of lighting devices. We camp at the beach because we love the dark skies that really make you feel like you are far away.

That means creating our own light for the atmosphere and for utility. I was really lucky to get my hands on an AlpenGlow 500 re-chargeable lantern before they are publicly available. This 500 Lumen (a lumen is a measurement for the total amount of visible light from a light source) multicolor USB lantern is amazing!

Coming back from our sunset shoot at the Cape Lookout lighthouse, we had our headlamps for the journey, but once we got back to camp and realized that we needed to take down our shade tent for the night, we needed extra light to make that happen. AlpenGlow to the rescue.

We always hang a lantern from the top of our tent until we are ready to go to sleep as well. Also, living on the East Coast power grid has been an adjustment with frequent power outages, we have been using the AlpenGlow to light up any room that we are sitting in while we wait for the lights to come back on!

Eldris LightDuty Blade

Mr. Misadventures is the go-to guy when it comes to the outdoors. He packs our stuff, loads our car, and makes sure we have everything we need. I am in charge of myself. This means packing my trusty Osprey backpack with my own essentials. One thing I have been missing for the longest time is a small knife that I can have on hand for “small jobs.” I am scared to death of blades that flip open, being as clumsy as I am, slicing off a finger is one misadventure I want to avoid.

I've thousands of road trip miles under my belt! And I am sharing my road trip essentials with you.

Being a military family organization and preparation was part of our DNA which is perfect for road trips. You need to make sure that you do your prep to ensure that the trip will go as smoothly as possible – because you are going to have to deal with the “unplanned” portions that always happen!

A big part of that comes down to what you pack.

Road Trip Planning

Never underestimate the value of having a good plan. Sure, you can take the opportunity to go off the beaten track and to explore as your heart sees fit, but you’re likely to run into a lot fewer issues if you have a good idea of where you’re going, what you’re doing, and what kind of stops are available on the way.

A good planner

A good road trip planner is something that you can sit down with before you hit the road, outlining all of your plans along the way, and then keep with you, updating as you do. Good planners even come with things like travel games that you can play in the car if you have the kids with you.

Entertainment

My sister and I didn't exactly get along, so it was vitally important for my parents to keep us occupied so that we didn't fight with each other. In the 70s and 80s that meant lots of books. That was the era before devices, unless, of course, you count listening to the naughty conversations on the CB radio, and before games were really portable.

Thank goodness the times have changed! And while I can appreciate the endless entertainment options that come from a device, I also think road trips are a great time to digitally unplug…except the GPS of course! Although sometimes it's fun to get lost from time to time!

Even as an incurable bookworm, reading can get monotonous during a road trip. Particularly if you are driving 8-10 hours a day (wait, what? That's only MY Dad?) I remember my sister and I also geeked out on Mad Libs. It was a different activity from reading and forced us to be creative. I suggest you get both Kristy and Rob's books because when it comes to road-tripping with kids, you can NEVER have too many activities!

A tablet mount

Access to constant digital entertainment is a marvel of the modern age and one that can make road trips go a lot easier. It is true that, in part, you want to make sure that you and the family get time away from the screens to better spend with one another, so you might want to ensure that there are some rules in place for when you stop, for instance.

However, when you’re on the road for miles, having a tablet mount can make it a lot easier for you to put on a movie or a show for the kids while you’re driving, keeping them distracted, engaged, and content so that you can keep your focus on the road.

Access to the net

In keeping with the theme of making digital entertainment more accessible on your trip, nowadays, it seems like 80% of the stuff we do is connected to the online world in one way or another. This can even go for your car’s infotainment system. As such, one accessory that many would consider a vital addition to any road trip is a WiFi hotspot.

This makes it a lot easier to stay connected on the road, no matter where you are, and can be vital if your SIM card doesn’t cover where you’re going. Of course, don’t forget to bring a charging bank with you, as well, so that you can keep your hotspot and digital devices charged and ready to go.

Keeping Things Clean + Organized

A car vacuum 

While you might be finding places to camp or hotel beds to sleep on during your nights, you’re going to be spending a lot of your time living in your car during a road trip. If you’re packing snacks and lunches to bring with you, then you should anticipate that things are going to get messy pretty soon.

Not to mention the leaves and dust you and your fellow travelers will track back in with you. As such, you should make sure that you have a good car vacuum with you. A quick lap over the interior every time you stop for the evening should help you keep the car from getting too dirty to tolerate.

Unless your road trip is just a trip across town, there will be inevitable stops along the way. Two things are vital for drivers staying on the road for long periods: hydration and staying awake. You should make sure that you pack a reusable water bottle with you. It makes it easier to stay hydrated and creates less waste than buying plastic water bottles along the way.

It will hold plenty of coffee to make sure that you’re sharp and alert as you go. Of course, a travel coffee maker can ensure that you’re able to top up at any stop, too, no matter where you might go.

Don’t sacrifice comfort for the journey

Don't underestimate just how rough a day in the car can be on you physically. Getting out and stretching your legs and taking the opportunity to stand straight once in a while is vital, but you can make sure that those long hours of sitting aren’t doing too much damage to your back by, for instance, getting a seat cushion to slip underneath you.

A lumbar support that you can strap to your chair can do a lot of good in making sure that you have a posture that isn’t putting all the pressure on the small of your back, too.

I felt good about my contributions when we lived in Berkeley. We lived in a LEED-certified home with solar and lots of green features.

But last year when we were on the road in an RV, we lived in a small space without a lot of “things” yet I think we were more wasteful than ever. Our limited kitchen space made storage and efficiency a necessity and we could have done a much better job using eco-friendly or reusable products.

As I prepare to move into our new home and stock up on everyday essentials, I've been researching products that will help me in my endeavor to be more “green.” Today I'm sharing some of my favorite finds.

Bee's Wrap Sustainable Food Storage

We are a Franco-American household, therefore, we have A LOT of cheese in our life. Once we get our cheeses home Mr. Misadventures immediately takes them out of the horrible plastic that they are sold in (unless you are lucky enough to have a cheesemonger…) and wraps them for storage. The problem is that many of the products used for storage are wasteful, and quite frankly not healthy, which is why I love the products from Bee's Wrap. It's also perfect for outdoor activities and picnics.

Bee's wax is nothing new, pioneers used it long ago. It just took the company's founder, Sarah Kaeck, to revitalize the old tradition of “infusing organic cotton with beeswax, organic jojoba oil, and tree resin” to “create a washable, reusable, and compostable alternative to plastic wrap.”

BUY: You can buy it on the Bee's Wrap website, but you'll pay shipping. If you have Amazon Prime you can avoid those fees, by purchasing from Amazon. You may also find it at local organic shops.

Etee Food Wraps

Another company making sustainable food wraps is Etee. They are using beeswax with essential oils, non-GMO soy wax, and coniferous tree resin along with organic cotton cloth. It's a really great substitute for plastic wrap and will also work well for wrapping cheeses, fruits, vegetables, and meats. You can even freeze it! They are reusable and compostable and made in Toronto, Canada.

I'm buying them to cover leftovers and wrap cheese, but you can also use them to pack snacks for a hike.

BUY: You can buy wraps on the Etee website, but plan ahead, they are so popular that there is a 2-week delay before your order can ship out!

Stasher Bags

I shudder at the amount of sandwich bags I went through as a child growing up! Not having kids, I'm not even sure kids still take a sandwich to lunch anymore, but if they do, I would implore parents to check out Stasher Bags. They have really cute designs to make it fun for children, but most importantly the pure platinum food-grade silicone has no harmful byproducts or chemicals.

As for me, I'm getting the 1/2 gallon size. We marinate a lot and while glass containers are our preference, the refrigerator is usually pretty full which means I tend to use Ziploc bags that I can fit into tighter places. The Stasher Bag is going to give me the flexibility of plastic, but in a sustainable reusable format that goes from fridge to microwave (although we don't own one) to stove top and then on to the dishwasher!

Cart Bags

When I first saw these bags online, my first thought was “oh cool!” because I am Type-A and love organization. I could just imagine how quickly I could unpack our groceries if everything was pre-sorted from the moment it left the store! But then I realized the environmental implications of people not using plastic bags and I knew I had to share this one.

Being from California where laws have forced stores to ban the use of plastic bags (and where they charge you for paper bags), I am long used to bringing my own bags, but on our travels through the US last year we were so surprised to learn that these laws are not very prevalent. Maybe the benefit of efficiency will drive more people to products like these.

BUY: First spotted them in an ad from Deal Snatchers, but I found them cheaper on Amazon (including one with a freezer bag!), with Prime there are no shipping costs.

Onya Life Backpack

I remember one of the first sustainable products I promoted on Misadventures with Andi. It was a reusable shopping bag from Joey Totes, the company still exists today and I still have the bags! Given it was way before the no-plastic shopping bag laws in California, this company was ahead of the curb in trying to promote eco-friendly products.

Shopping bags have become omnipresent, but what about backpacks? I really love this brilliant backpack from Onya Life made from recycled old plastic water bottles that have been turned into fiber!

It scrunches up into practically nothing and fits into a tiny bag you can throw into your suitcase. It is perfect for days in the city when you don't want to carry a purse or when you are on a road trip and decides to take an impromptu hike and you just need something light to carry your water, sunscreen, and snacks.

BUY: You can get this backpack on Onya Life's website, but be aware that it comes from Australia. Still, shipping isn't too terrible. You can always purchase a carbon offset to make up for it.
