To be honest, I don't normally travel with carry-on luggage, except for extremely short trips. I bring my MZ Wallace Medium Tote Bag and a laptop backpack, but it is a lot to carry on my shoulders/back.

With the LEVEL8 Road Runner textured carry-on (in 20″), I can put my tote bag on top of the carry-on and glide through the airport, train station, and on the street, I am in love! And all my personal items fit with room to spare.

My favorite feature about the LEVEL8 Road Runner is the added laptop pocket. I was able to easily grab my laptop from my carry-on when needed without any hassle. The LEVEL8 textured carry-on also features a large main compartment, zipped side pockets, and a front compartment that's perfect for easy access to my passport and other essential documents.

The carry-on made my travels more manageable, and I didn't have to worry about packing or unpacking constantly.

I have tried hard shell bags with a “split construction” (bag zips down the middle and opens into two shallower main compartments) but they were extremely awkward and I went back to a duffel-style suitcase. In reality, that was the thing I wanted to test out the most with the LEVEL8. I am not sure what voodoo LEVEL8 luggage has conjured, but it was super easy to open, close, and maneuver, even in small. spaces.

I am now a convert!

It provides ample storage space and can handle being checked when traveling by plane. The four 360° easy-moving wheels make it convenient to navigate through airports, crowded streets, and even rough terrain.

I waltzed through RDU with both LEVEL8 cases without any problems at all.

We are preparing for a big southwest road trip. It will include a cross-country trip to get to Arizona-Utah and then some back-country camping at White Pocket, etc. We have our Tepui tent on the top of the truck, and the truck bed has a slider to keep gear, but our PAKMULE hitch rack cargo carrier is a bonus as it is giving us extra storage capacity!

Sierra Design's Deluxe Collapsible Wagon

[We have our Tepui tent on top of our truck so you may wonder why the heck we would want a wagon for… Well, there are lots of times, often driven by Mr. Misadventures photographic activities where I find myself hauling more than what I can carry on my back. Like on a recent camping trip at Cape Lookout where we did a sunset shoot at the lighthouse a mile away from our campsite. We had to walk up the main road which is all sand and besides photo equipment, I also brought a chair and a few other items that I carried there and back. It would have been so much easier to pull the wagon. 

When we don't camp directly on the beach, we camp at beach campsites that are on one side of the dunes. To access the beach you have to walk over the dunes with all the stuff you want for the beach in which case the Deluxe Collapsible Wagon from Sierra Designs is a godsend!

AlpenGlow Lantern from BioLite

Having good lighting is important when camping. Mr. Misadventures and I always have a variety of lightning in the form of headlamps, lanterns, etc. We aren't that into the traditional flashlight (you need your hands!) and prefer these other types of lighting devices. We camp at the beach because we love the dark skies that really make you feel like you are far away.

That means creating our own light for the atmosphere and for utility. I was really lucky to get my hands on an AlpenGlow 500 re-chargeable lantern before they are publicly available. This 500 Lumen (a lumen is a measurement for the total amount of visible light from a light source) multicolor USB lantern is amazing!

Coming back from our sunset shoot at the Cape Lookout lighthouse, we had our headlamps for the journey, but once we got back to camp and realized that we needed to take down our shade tent for the night, we needed extra light to make that happen. AlpenGlow to the rescue.

We always hang a lantern from the top of our tent until we are ready to go to sleep as well. Also, living on the East Coast power grid has been an adjustment with frequent power outages, we have been using the AlpenGlow to light up any room that we are sitting in while we wait for the lights to come back on!

Eldris LightDuty Blade

Mr. Misadventures is the go-to guy when it comes to the outdoors. He packs our stuff, loads our car, and makes sure we have everything we need. I am in charge of myself. This means packing my trusty Osprey backpack with my own essentials. One thing I have been missing for the longest time is a small knife that I can have on hand for “small jobs.” I am scared to death of blades that flip open, being as clumsy as I am, slicing off a finger is one misadventure I want to avoid.

I've thousands of road trip miles under my belt! And I am sharing my road trip essentials with you.

Being a military family organization and preparation was part of our DNA which is perfect for road trips. You need to make sure that you do your prep to ensure that the trip will go as smoothly as possible – because you are going to have to deal with the “unplanned” portions that always happen!

A big part of that comes down to what you pack.

Road Trip Planning

Never underestimate the value of having a good plan. Sure, you can take the opportunity to go off the beaten track and to explore as your heart sees fit, but you’re likely to run into a lot fewer issues if you have a good idea of where you’re going, what you’re doing, and what kind of stops are available on the way.

A good planner

A good road trip planner is something that you can sit down with before you hit the road, outlining all of your plans along the way, and then keep with you, updating as you do. Good planners even come with things like travel games that you can play in the car if you have the kids with you.

Entertainment

My sister and I didn't exactly get along, so it was vitally important for my parents to keep us occupied so that we didn't fight with each other. In the 70s and 80s that meant lots of books. That was the era before devices, unless, of course, you count listening to the naughty conversations on the CB radio, and before games were really portable.

Thank goodness the times have changed! And while I can appreciate the endless entertainment options that come from a device, I also think road trips are a great time to digitally unplug…except the GPS of course! Although sometimes it's fun to get lost from time to time!

Not to mention the leaves and dust you and your fellow travelers will track back in with you. As such, you should make sure that you have a good car vacuum with you. A quick lap over the interior every time you stop for the evening should help you keep the car from getting too dirty to tolerate.

Unless your road trip is just a trip across town, there will be inevitable stops along the way. That means public restrooms, possibly some restaurants or coffee stops (unless you pack your own), and these days that means carrying extra items to clean and sanitize your surfaces and your hands. Packing everything you need in a big suitcase might seem like the most convenient answer and, if you were spending all of your time in a hotel room, it might work out just fine. Two things are vital for drivers staying on the road for long periods: hydration and staying awake. You should make sure that you pack a reusable water bottle with you. It makes it easier to stay hydrated and creates less waste than buying plastic water bottles along the way.

It will hold plenty of coffee to make sure that you’re sharp and alert as you go. Of course, a travel coffee maker can ensure that you’re able to top up at any stop, too, no matter where you might go.

Getting out and stretching your legs and taking the opportunity to stand straight once in a while is vital, but you can make sure that those long hours of sitting aren’t doing too much damage to your back by, for instance, getting a seat cushion to slip underneath you.

A lumbar support that you can strap to your chair can do a lot of good in making sure that you have a posture that isn’t putting all the pressure on the small of your back, too.
