Tourism chiefs alarmed as Green List of travel zones to be slashed to just four European countries

Noble Horvath

Aviation and tourism officials expressed alarm after it was signalled that the Government’s Green List for travel during the Covid-19 pandemic will be slashed to just four countries from next week.

One airline official warned the new Green List would effectively cripple an already devastated industry.

In a Government briefing memo – seen by the Irish Independent – it was confirmed Ireland would drop four countries from the current list.

That’s because they have exceeded the stipulated Covid-19 rate of 25 cases per 100,000 people based on data from the European Centre for Disease Control.

Those countries are Iceland (90.5), Germany (27.3), Lithuania (27.5) and Poland (25.6). The new, revised Green List will come into effect from September 28.

Just a single country, Liechtenstein (20.8), will be added to the list – leaving only four countries that people can travel to or from without having to restrict their movements on

Cordova revives tourism with local tour packages

Ehda M. Dagooc (The Freeman) – August 29, 2020 – 12:00am

CEBU, Philippines —  Heeding with the Provincial government’s push to re-open the tourism industry, the municipality of Cordova on Mactan Island is launching a series of activities to interest domestic tourists.

In an interview with Cordova Mayor Mary Therese Sitoy-Cho, she said the town will be launching its tourism recovery plan through “Dance with the Marine Life” and “Sing with the Mangroves” tour packages, to start off the re-opening of tourism, one of the town’s economic drivers.

“These tour packages were created to spur the economy and create source of income for the people while protecting them against Covid-19 contamination,” said Cho.

Considered as the home of the Netflix-featured “Bakasi” recipe delicacy, the town of Cordova, is now slowly attracting local tourists, the lady Mayor said.

Putting destination Lincoln-St. Catharines on the tourism map

Noble Horvath

It’s a place where town meets country.

St. Catharines and Lincoln have long been urban and rural neighbours, but they’ve now teamed up to market their individual attributes as a joint destination.

“The goal is really to match the bench experience with the urban experience. We have assets that complement each other,” said Karen Doyle, tourism marketing officer for St. Catharines.

“We have a larger accommodations sector, they have more winery partners. They can complement each other but we’re still offering a common experience between the two municipalities.”

Doyle said the idea is to recognize the value of visitors to the areas and try and get them to stretch their spending money between the two communities so all businesses get out ahead.

A sub-regional tourism marketing partnership was formalized last week with St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik and Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton signing a memorandum of understanding.

Dan Nielsen: Lithuanian tourism agency touts ice cream | Business

Noble Horvath

Northern Michigan’s tourist destination marketing organizations have plenty of material to work with: beaches, dunes, ski hills, boating, hiking, biking, wine, beer, 160 flavors of Moomers ice cream and a cornucopia of other attractions and consumables.

Our area basically sells itself to tourists. Marketers just need to communicate effectively with potential visitors.

Some tourist destinations face more of a challenge. Case in point: Lithuania.

“National Tourism Development Agency Lithuania Travel” last week concentrated on telling the world about the dozen “most bizarre flavors from Lithuania.” The press release deals with ice cream.

I knew virtually nothing about Lithuania, even less about what it offers as a tourist destination. The folks at Lithuania Travel apparently understand that. Here’s the first paragraph on the organization’s “About Us” page:

“To get a picky traveler interested in visiting a small European country that doesn’t boast spectacular wonders of nature or architectural miracles and is

Hong Kong’s return to leisure travel should start with neighbouring parts of mainland China once a retreat of Covid-19 allows borders to reopen, according to a top tourism official in the city.

Tourism Board executive director Dane Cheng Ting-yat said its aim was for travel in both directions to resume first with the mainland Chinese city of Shenzhen, before restoring links with Guangzhou and further expanding into the Greater Bay Area, an economic zone comprising Hong Kong, Macau and nine cities in Guangdong province.

To encourage spending and travelling, the board is also putting together offers, including Cathay Pacific Airways’ giveaway of 500,000 flight tickets, through a planned online platform called Open House Hong Kong. A relaunched Hello Hong Kong programme would further offer

Are S$100 Tourism Vouchers Enough To Fill The Gaping Hole Of Tourism’s Declining Revenue?

Noble Horvath

COVID-19 has made a hard-hitting impact on the tourism industry.

Singapore started off the year strong with 1.69 million visitors in January — an increase from 1.62 million the same month a year ago.

However, as travel restrictions were imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus outbreak, numbers plunged about 99 per cent year-on-year in recent months.

“Given that we are a small country and we don’t have the benefit of domestic travel, what we are trying to do now is to encourage Singaporeans to visit some of our local tourist attractions,” said Chaly Mah, chairman of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) on the sidelines of the Singapore Summit in July.

In other words, Singapore is trying to make up some of the shortfall in tourism revenue by turning to domestic tourism.
