TONYA MOSLEY, HOST:

Here’s one thing that isn’t the same during a pandemic – winning the Stanley Cup.

ARI SHAPIRO, HOST:

Last night, the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Dallas Stars and were crowned champions of a coronavirus-shortened hockey season. It was a big moment. You can hear it in the call by Doc Emrick for NBC.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

DOC EMRICK: And the Tampa Bay Lightning have won the Stanley Cup.

SHAPIRO: But listen closely to that arena sound.

(CHEERING)

SHAPIRO: That’s not the cheering of thousands of Tampa fans or the groans of Dallas supporters. It’s the whoops of a couple dozen hockey players and staff.

MOSLEY: This game, like much of the season, was played in the NHL’s quarantine bubble – no fans, just an empty arena in Edmonton, Alberta.

SHAPIRO: That may have been a welcome change

MacNeil and Horstmann win at Laguna Seca

Drivers reveled in the capabilities and power of the Ferrari 488 Challenge Evo around the technical 11-turn circuit and particularly through the famed corkscrew corner.

Trofeo Pirelli

Cooper MacNeil (Ferrari of Westlake) came storming back from his disappointing result yesterday to take a dominant win in race 2 at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca, beating the competition by nine seconds despite a mid-race safety car period.  While Cooper stormed off from the pole, the action was fierce further back as the Trofeo Pirelli competitors had to duke it out with each other and also some of the Trofeo Pirelli AM drivers who had shown an impressive pace this weekend.  Jordan Workman (Ferrari of Central Florida) came home second while Ross Chouest (Boardwalk Ferrari) and Joe Rubbo (Ferrari of Long Island) spent much of the race in an epic scrap with several drivers in the Trofeo Pirelli AM category, with the final

SISTERON, France (AP) — A basketball player weaving through the defense. A skier dancing between the gates. A soccer player dribbling zig-zag toward the goal.

Australian rider Caleb Ewan borrowed the playbook from other sports as he slalomed through the bunch to win a sprint finish and claim the third stage of the Tour de France on Monday, while Julian Alaphilippe held onto the yellow jersey that he claimed with a dramatic stage victory a day earlier.

With about 100 meters to go, Ewan trailed five other

Despite Gateway win, Josef Newgarden losing ground to Scott Dixon for IndyCar title

Noble Horvath

For the fourth year running, the Scott Dixon-Josef Newgarden title bout lives on, though with five races to go, not nearly as tightly as the Team Penske driver would wish. Sunday’s race-winner at Gateway exits the weekend with three poles on the year, to Dixon’s none, and holds a hefty lead on laps led in 2020 (400, the overall series lead, to Dixon’s 340 in second-place) – yet he finds himself falling behind.

Unloading at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Newgarden found himself in a manageable 49-point hole. But after the two drivers split the weekend doubleheader at Gateway, that deficit has ballooned to 96.

Herman rallies to win Wyndham, qualify for FedEx playoffs

Noble Horvath

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Jim Herman’s got a plan to keep his PGA Tour career thriving — play more rounds with President Donald Trump.

Whenever Herman plays golf with the president, soon after he hoists a trophy.

It happened in 2016 with his breakthrough victory at the Houston Open, again before he won the Barbasol tournament last year — and now before Herman’s improbable rally Sunday at Wyndham Championship to make the FedEx Cup playoffs.

“He’s been a big supporter of mine,” Herman said about Trump, his regular golf partner while working as an assistant professional at Trump National Bedminster in New Jersey. “I need to play golf with him a little bit more.”

Herman gave the president plenty to cheer about on the weekend, a victory even the 42-year-old didn’t see coming.

“This was out of the blue. I’ll tell you that,” Herman said.

Herman shot a 7-under 63

UCA announces stadium policies

The University of Central Arkansas announced its home football seating protocols for the 2020-21 season Wednesday, which will include limiting capacity to approximately 20%.

Estes Stadium, which has a capacity of 10,000, will be limited to 2,000 fans, and all in attendance will be required to wear masks once they enter the stadium. Season-ticket holders will be given first access to reserving seats, and any available tickets after that will be provided to the general public on Thursdays ahead of each home game. Tailgating — as well as the “Bear Walk” — will not be allowed this season on Bruce Street, in accordance with the Arkansas Department of Health’s guidelines, according to a news release.

UCA will have only two home games this season, with Missouri State serving as the home opener on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. and Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 11 at

IndyCar championship leader Scott Dixon continued his winning ways in 2020 by holding off a hard-charging Takuma Sato in thrilling fashion, winning the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 Race 1 at World Wide Technology Raceway on Saturday in the second-closest series finish ever at the track.

Dixon, who started third, drove the No. 9 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda to his 50th career win and fourth win in eight races this season with a .1404 margin of victory over Sato in the No. 30 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda.

That result swapped positions from the 104th Indianapolis 500 last Sunday, when Sato held off Dixon for his second victory in The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.

“It’s awesome,” Dixon said. “I can’t thank the PNC Bank crew enough. Superb race all day. Sato was going to be strong at the end, but I didn’t realize how strong he was
