Our childhood education environment is the place where we develop as human beings and grow into productive, contributing members of society. As a student, I want someone in charge who will ensure that our growth and development are prioritized.
When I first heard about the Preparing Tomorrow’s Leaders Board of Education campaign, I was overjoyed at their focus on fostering diversity. As a minority, hearing candidates celebrate diversity was a refreshing change of pace. The positive energy and bright ideas that all three candidates continue to introduce throughout their campaign inspire students to reflect on the choices and initiatives the Board of Education supports. The three candidates make assertions and propose policies with Westfield students and their needs at the forefront of their thought process.
As a part of this campaign, I was tasked with conducting a comparative analysis of classes and programs offered at Westfield and classes and programs offered by surrounding districts. Specifically, I researched the technology classes offered at Westfield and surrounding districts, and the special services programs offered at Westfield and surrounding districts, and anti-bullying programs. Throughout this process, I developed a greater understanding of how a public school system is built, what goes on behind the scenes, and what everyday people like myself can do to improve existing systems. I gained valuable research skills that I can implement in school classes and future opportunities. The research I conducted also taught me how to stay organized and improve my communication skills.
The candidates and volunteers were constantly in contact, discussing opinions about Board of Education decisions, parent concerns, and policy proposals. Throughout the entire process, they were always open to unique perspectives and made a substantial effort to accommodate for all members of the Westfield community. Their leadership and drive will influence me to contribute to my community as I grow older. The experience I got through volunteering with PTL is one that shaped my understanding of campaigning, research, and communication.
I look forward to seeing all the great things the PTL candidates continue to do for the Westfield community, and helping them in any way I can!
