OUR AREA ABOUT RACIAL INJUSTICES. THE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM GIVING YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE AREA A CHANCE TO VOICE THEIR CONCERNS ABOUT LAW ENFORCEMENT WVTM 13 S CHIP SCARBOROUGH EXPLAINS WHY IT’S ALL ABOUT BRIDGING THE GAP. BIRMINGHAM YOUTH HAD A CHANCE TO SHARE SOME OF THEIR INTERACTIONS WITH POLICE DURING A SPECIAL ZOOM SESSION TITLED BIRMINGHAM SPEAKS. MOST OF THE PARTICIPANTS HAVE AT LEAST CROSS PATHS WITH A SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER AT SOME POINT AND STUDENTS HAVE DIFFERING OPINIONS ON THOSE SROS. I REALLY HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO KIND OF BUILD A RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM. AND SO WHEN I SAW THEM LIKE OUT IN THE COMMUNITY, I REMEMBER THEM FROM SCHOOL INSTEAD OF MORE LIKELY PROFILING BLACK OR BROWN STUDENTS. THEY’RE ACTUALLY COGNIZANT OF ROLL THAT THEY’RE UNCONSCIOUS BIAS HAS WITHIN THEIR JOB WITHIN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM MEMBERS OF THE BIRMINGHAM PUBLIC SAFETY TASK FORCE LISTENS CLOSELY AS YOUNG PEOPLE SHARED PERSONAL EXPERIENCES WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT USING THEIR STORIES TO MAKE BENEFICIAL CHANGES IN OUR COMMUNITY AND ELSEWHERE MORE RECENTLY THIS SUMMER I WAS IN MINNESOTA SPENDING TIME WITH FRIENDS AND I GOT PULLED OVER AT NIGHT AND THE COP WAS LIKE, DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING ON YOUR RECORD? HE WAS LIKE, CAN YOU AFFORD THIS CAR AND SOMETIMES DIFFICULT? STORIES TO SHARE EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE MANY GOOD EXPERIENCES AS WELL THESE YOUNG PEOPLE JUST WANT A BETTER TOMORROW FOR THEM AND OTHERS THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR LIKE PROTECTING US AND THEY’RE RESPONSIBLE FOR KEEPING SAFE. AND SO TO BE ABLE TO LIKE GENUINELY WANT TO PROVIDE LIKE SUPPORT AND HILL IN A WAY IS SOMETHING THAT YOU KNOW, I THINK IS IMPORTANT AND STUDENTS WHO TOOK PART IN BIRMINGHAM. SPEAK SAY IT REALLY JUST ALL BOILS DOWN TO OFFICERS HAVING AN OBJECTIVE VIEWPOINT WHEN THEY APPROACHED SOMEONE NO MATTER THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN A
