While discussing their upcoming Marvel event King in Black at New York Comic Con, writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Stegman teased some major developments for Eddie Brock/Venom.
“I’ll say this, the events of King in Black change Eddie Brock in a profound way,” Cate explained.
Cates acknowledged that even though he and his Marvel colleagues have used this kind of hyperbolic language to promote many other crossover events in the past, King in Black will undoubtedly live up to the promise. “I like to think I’ve never said it and it not come true, but this is a fundamental change to Eddie Brock and his place in the larger universe and his place as a Marvel character going forward,” he noted.

Cates also emphasized that King in Black has been a big part of his and Stegman’s long-term plans since the beginning of their Venom run, noting that it was the commitment of their fan base that allowed them to crescendo their story with an epic universe-spanning crossover. “I’m just blown away at the amount of support, not just from Marvel… but also from you guys as fans that have let us see this insane storyline through,” Cates said.
King in Black #1, by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman, goes on sale Dec. 2 from Marvel Comics.
