Kohl’s Corp. is starting to hire seasonal associates in preparation for what is sure to be an unusual holiday shopping season marked by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Menomonee Falls-based retailer said Thursday it was starting to hire seasonal associates for its stores, distribution and e-commerce fulfillment centers across the country.

In an unusual time, Kohl’s said it expects its holiday hiring to be similar to previous seasons. The company is not sharing the total number of hires this year. In the last two years, Kohl’s has planned to hire around 90,000 seasonal associates for the holidays.

New hires won’t have to work on Thanksgiving Day — the company already announced that its stores would be closed on the holiday this year.

Kohl’s is hosting a virtual national hiring event Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time. Interested candidates can visit to view and apply for open positions, Kohl’s said.

“We know customers will be shopping online more than ever this year and we’re staffing accordingly to support increased digital fulfillment efforts,” said Marc Chini, Kohl’s chief people officer, in a news release.

The company is doubling the number of stores with the ability to fulfill online orders this season to about 300 stores. Kohl’s has more than 1,100 stores in 49 states.

Kohl’s CEO Michelle Gass has said that the company is preparing for a “holiday season like no other.” The company is preparing for the holiday shopping season to start as early as October.

Earlier in September, Kohl’s said it was reducing its corporate workforce by 15% as a cost-cutting measure because of the coronavirus pandemic and corresponding economic downturn.
