UTEP football updates:
Final, UTEP 17 ACU 13: UTEP grinds out four first downs to soak the final 5:19 off the clock. They were outgained by an FCS team, but are now 2-1 for the first time since 2011. Fields was huge on the last drive.
5:19 4th, UTEP 17 ACU 13: ACU drives the field but UTEP gets a red-zone stop. The Wildcats convert the 44-yard field goal to get within three. Praise Amaewhule with a sack that was the big play defensively.
8:52 4th, UTEP 17 ACU 10: ACU stuffs UTEP on a 4th-and-1 from the ACU 33. Officials signal UTEP first down, but it’s a full yard short. ACU demands, and gets, a measurement that shows the ball a yard short.
13:23 4th, UTEP 17 ACU 10: UTEP defense responds with a crisp three-and-out. UTEP can put the hammer down on this game if they show some k
14:12 4th, UTEP 17 ACU 10: A drive that lasted 7:46 ends with Fields going 4 yards for the score on third down. Didn’t look like there was much of a hole but Fields found what there was. ACU leads in yardage 255-215 but the Miners have been opportunistic this game.
They’ve had three decent drives and scored 17 points on them.
End 3rd, UTEP 10, ACU 10: That just flew by and ends with UTEP in good shape. A play after they felt they should have gotten a pass interference in the end zone, a defensive holding is called on ACU to extend the drive.
UTEP will have a second-and-goal from the 7 to start t
6:58 3rd, UTEP 10, ACU 10: ACU marches down the field but UTEP gets a red zone stop, forcing the Wildcats into a 29-yard field goal. Justin Prince gets a tackle on third-and-4 to give the Miners the stop. We’re tied up.
Half, UTEP 10, ACU 7: ACU converts a fourth down on its own end but UTEP gets a stop. Miners can’t move away from their goalline, but survive to punt and get a stop to go to the half up 10-7. Wildcats with a 184-128 advantage in yards and have generally looked better, but UTEP gets two turnovers and stops the fake field goal. That makes a big difference.
6:18 2nd, UTEP 10, ACU 7: What a sequence for UTEP. ACU is marching for more points, fumbles the ball away. Gavin Hardison to Jacob Cowing for 50 yards, Fields scores on a 5-yard run. Two plays, 45 yards immediately following a fumbe.
7:06, ACU 7, UTEP 3: ACU marches to the UTEP 27, but fumbles a handoff and Dennis Barnes recovers for UTEP’s second turnover of the game. Plus ACU committed a personal foul in the scrum.
8:31, ACU 7, UTEP 3: UTEP crisply marches to the 9, then retreats a yard and settles for the Gavin Baechle field goal. Ten plays, 58 yards, 4:21. Joshua Fields is getting all the carries, so it doesn’t appear Hankins is completely healthy.
12:52, ACU 7, UTEP 0: ACU lines up for a 50-yard field goal on third-and-9 but fakes it to the kicker. Justin Prince chased him down short of the first down.
End 1st, ACU 7, UTEP 0: ACU converts on 4th-and-1 on the 36 to keep possession, nearing the red zone.
0:55 1st, ACU 7, UTEP 0: Classic Conference USA sequence. UTEP backs ACU up 7 yards and the Wildcats punt. Miners thought they got a piece of the ball, officials didn’t and called a roughing penalty on UTEP. Then the officials marked off a 17-yard penalty, because, well, Conference USA.
5:19 1st, ACU 7, UTEP 0: Two positive developments for UTEP. The Miners get a three-and-out and get an offensive first down to get out of negative yardage. But then they punt, so it’s not progressing particularly well for the home team.
8:22 1st, ACU 7, UTEP 0: ACU now has a 75 to minus-6 edge in yardage after UTEP backs up seven yards and punts. UTEP should buy the version of the game with a reset button. That would be a big asset for them in first quarters.
9:03 1st, ACU 7, UTEP 0: ACU goes 56 yards in six plays to get on the board. UTEP forced one third-and-5 but couldn’t get off the field. ACU is averaging 5.9 yards per carry.
12:09 1st, UTEP 0, ACU 0: UTEP goes three-and-out, gaining 1 yard. The Miners are not a fast-starting team.
13:20 1st, UTEP 0, ACU 0: UTEP defense was off to another terrible start until Dy’Vonne Inyang forced a fumble on the Miner 35 that Duron Lowe recovered. The Miners survive after two terrible plays to start the game.
5 minutes until kickoff: Justin Garrett is wearing the No. 2 to honor Luke Laufenberg. He will wear it every game except the Oct. 17 game against Southern Miss when he will wear his normal 17 to honor his sister. The anniversary of her death is Oct. 17.
25 minutes until kickoff: Josh Ortega, on the other hand, is not suited up. He had spent some time with the strength and conditioning staff during the week and now is out.
35 minutes until kickoff: Deion Hankins is suited up and stretching wit the team. He didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday and his status was considered a game-time decision. He’s UTEP’s leading rusher this year so though this is a welcome development.
