Novato’s new and improved Hill Recreation Area is now open with activities and amenities available for all ages!
The Hill Recreation Area includes a synthetic turf sports field, grass field, pickleball and bocce ball courts, and chess/checker tables. Please note that at this time, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the bocce ball courts are closed until further notice, and health and safety guidelines are in place for all other activities.
Other project features include expanded parking with additional accessible parking spaces and electric vehicle charging stations, the installation of new bioretention landscape features to filter water before it leaves the site and 160 new trees and over 2400 new shrubs planted which help reduce our environmental footprint and beautify the park.
“Our new Hill Recreation Area was truly a team effort between our community, staff, Council, partner organizations and our contractor,” said City Manager Adam McGill. “The input from our community throughout the design process combined with the hard work of our City staff brought us this state-of-the-art facility with amenities for all ages. We’re proud to say that even with delays due to the COVID-19 shutdown, we are opening this facility both ahead of schedule and under budget. We look forward to many years of Novato Fun at Hill Rec!”
The City Council approved the Hill Recreation Area Master Plan in Spring 2017. With a total approved project budget of $7.8 million, the Hill Recreation Area was primarily funded by Measure F, the City’s temporary 5-year half cent local sales tax. As well as developer-paid Quimby and Park Development Impact Fees utilized to support City infrastructure. The project is anticipated to be completed under budget, and staff will recommend reserving any budget savings to provide community-requested play areas and site maintenance at Council’s discretion.
The Hill Recreation Area, adjacent to the Margaret Todd Center and Hill Gymnasium, is located at 1560 Hill Road. Park information, including field & court reservations and fees, is available at novato.org/hillrecreation.
