A date has been set for a booking system to take effect at Solihull’s rubbish tip – but residents will be limited to just one trip a week.
In a major u-turn, the council had announced last month that it would be introducing time slots for Bickenhill Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Now it has been confirmed that the new policy will start next Monday (September 21), with householders no longer allowed to turn up on-spec.
The system was agreed in response to regular complaints that some people were queueing for hours outside the Coventry Road facility.
A council spokesman said: “Each appointment slot will be for 15 minutes.
“We are limiting visits to one per household per week. This is to try to make sure that every household that needs to use the service can book a slot.
“Please pre-sort recycling and waste at home for a quick turnaround time to keep yourself safe and to help the site remain on schedule.”
Residents will have to log-on to the council website to access the booking form, providing details including their name, address and vehicle registration number.
As previously announced, the system will only be open to Solihull residents, amid concerns that visitors from neighbouring Birmingham could be putting further strain on the site.
There is a slightly different form for those with a permitted vehicle.
Solihull had originally resisted calls for a booking system on the basis that it still wouldn’t increase the capacity of the site, where social distancing measures have been in force since May.
Although Cllr Ken Hawkins, cabinet member for environment and highways, admitted last month that the congestion had not died down in the way that the council had hoped.
This prompted the decision to switch to a similar system to the one already adopted in the likes of Coventry and Warwickshire.
Where possible, residents have also been asked to consider donating unwanted items to charity shops or use the bulky waste service to ease the pressure on local services.
If you don’t have access to the internet you can book a slot by calling Solihull Connect on 0121 704 8000.
