A snorkeller has been attacked by a crocodile off the far north coast of Queensland.

The man, believed to be aged in his 30s, was bitten by an estuarine crocodile in Anchor Bay on Lizard Island in the Great Barrier Reef around 4pm on Wednesday.

He was snorkelling when the crocodile bit his head and neck, the Department of Environment and Science (DES) confirmed in a statement to Yahoo News Australia.

The man was airlifted to Cairns Hospital after being treated at the scene.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service confirmed an adult male was transferred from Lizard Island to Cairns on Wednesday afternoon in a stable condition.

The man was treated for non-life threatening injuries at the hospital, DES said.

Wildlife officers from DES will travel to Lizard Island in an attempt to locate and remove the crocodile involved in the attack.

“The Manager of the Lizard Island Resort has offered the use of two of the resort’s vessels to assist with those efforts,” DES said in their statement.

“All crocodiles that pose a threat to human safety are targeted for removal under the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan.”
