There were 218 travel agencies operating in the Macau SAR in 2019, employing 4,614 people and generating some MOP8.29 billion (US$1 billion) in receipts, data published by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) indicated.
Despite a drop in receipts, a 9.5 per cent fall, the Gross Value Added generated by the sector increased by 10.6 per cent year-on-year to MOP1.37 billion, as a significant reduction was observed in expenditure on purchase of goods & services and commissions.
There were a total of 19 travel agencies which employed 50 or more people, with receipts of these travel agencies down by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to MOP 2.92 billion, mainly generated by rentals of coaches with driver.
Most travel agencies in the SAR employed less than 10 persons, some 100 agencies, with these smaller businesses generating some MOP2.53 billion.
Macau received 39.4 million tourists last year, with the Covid-19 pandemic expected to reduce that number considerably this year.
Several measures were implemented by local authorities to assist travel agencies struggling with the lack of tourists, including retraining employees to other professions and organizing local tours for residents.
